Last updated 4 October 2026

Short version: most trades on UgathSell go smoothly. A few habits make sure yours do too — meet on campus, check the item, and pay once it's in your hands.

Meeting up

1.1.Meet on campus, in a busy public place and in daylight — a library entrance, a café or a faculty lobby.

1.2.Avoid car parks, empty rooms and hostel rooms, and don't invite someone you haven't met to where you live.

1.3.Bring a friend if you can, or tell one where you're going and who you're meeting.

1.4.If something feels off when you arrive, it's fine to leave. You don't owe anyone a sale.

Paying

2.1.The safest way is to pay when the item is in your hands, after you've checked it.

2.2.Avoid paying a deposit before you've met. A seller who needs one to "hold" an item can simply wait until you meet.

2.3.If you pay by transfer or e-wallet, sellers: check that the money has actually arrived in your account before handing over the item. A screenshot of a receipt is not proof — it can be edited.

2.4.UgathSell doesn't handle payments, so there's no refund we can make if a payment goes wrong.

Checking the item

3.1.Look at the actual item, not just the photos. Compare it with the listing.

3.2.Electronics: switch it on, check the screen, buttons, ports and battery, and make sure the charger works. For phones and laptops, check that they aren't locked to someone else's account.

3.3.Books and notes: flip through for missing pages and heavy highlighting.

3.4.Furniture and bikes: check that everything is sturdy and nothing is missing.

Scams to watch for

Most scams follow a few patterns. Be careful if someone:

a)asks for a deposit, a "booking fee" or payment before you've seen the item;

b)sends a transfer receipt instead of the money, or says they "overpaid" and asks for the difference back;

c)asks you to pay a courier, delivery or insurance fee to a third party;

d)sends you a link to log in, verify your account or receive a payment — it may be a fake page built to steal your password;

e)wants to move the chat to WhatsApp, Telegram or elsewhere straight away;

f)offers a price that seems too good to be true, or pushes you to decide quickly;

g)says they're from UgathSell. We never message you about a listing, and we never ask for your password, a code or money.

Protecting your account and details

5.1.Keep the conversation in UgathSell Messages. If something goes wrong, it's there for a moderator to see when you report it.

5.2.Don't share your IC number, bank login, one-time codes (OTP/TAC) or password with anyone.

5.3.Only share your phone number when you're ready to meet, and only if you're comfortable doing so.

5.4.Before logging in, check that the address in your browser is the real UgathSell site.

If something goes wrong

6.1.Report the listing, the member or the conversation using the Report button. Screenshots help a moderator act quickly.

6.2.Stop replying to anyone who pressures or threatens you — you can block them from the chat.

6.3.If you've lost money, contact your bank straight away, and report it to the police. In Malaysia you can also call the National Scam Response Centre on 997.

6.4.If you think someone else has got into your account, change your password and let us know.
